On August 31, Dwyer Instruments, Inc. sponsored a blood drive with the American Red Cross at the Michigan City headquarters.

According to statistics gathered by the Red Cross: "Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood" (Blood Facts and Statistics). The more blood that is on hand, the more quickly an individual can receive treatment.

Donations are particularly important at this time, when the U.S. is faced with a shortage of blood donations. In a press release this past July, Shaun Gilmore, president, Red Cross Biomedical Services noted that:

The decline in summer donations is causing a significant draw-down of our overall blood supply, and we urgently
need people to give now to restock hospital shelves and help save lives […] Every day, patients recovering from accidents or those receiving treatments for cancer or blood disorders rely on lifesaving blood products regardless of the season. (Emergency need for blood donations as Red Cross experiences critical blood shortage)

Speed and accessibility of blood donations is necessary for urgent medical care. In addition, there are a large number of potential donors in the United States but a small number of individuals that actually do so. "Although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood at any given time, less than 10 percent of that eligible population actually do each year" (Blood Facts and Statistics). With high need and low supply, donations prove to be a valuable and vital asset to medical facilities.

Through this event, 28 units were collected for donation. Dwyer employees participate in blood drives and several other community events each year.
