Home / Industry Articles / V-Ball Valve Advantages V-Ball valves offer a variety of advantages when compared to large, expensive globe valves for flow control applications. W.E. Anderson’s WE06 threaded stainless steel V-ball valve and WE07 flanged stainless steel V-ball valve offer the market highly accurate flow control in a compact ball valve package. W.E. Anderson V-ball valves offer equal percentage flow control, bubble tight shut off, lower pressure drops and higher shut-off pressures. Both series can be configured with pneumatic or electric actuators to fit your flow control needs. Flow Control Precision machined V-balls, available in 60° and 90°, offer equal percentage flow characteristics, matching flow performance of a globe valve. As the ball rotates, desired flow rates can be achieved by positioning the ball anywhere between 0° and 90°. Because V-ball valves use smaller actuators, their response time is much faster than globe valves that use large diaphragm actuators. Bubble Tight Shut-Off Globe valves are designed for flow control but they are not effective shut-off valves. Globe valve’s metal to metal seats allow material to leak through the valve even when it is closed. Therefore, additional shut-off valves must be added to isolate a globe valve. V-ball valves have soft seats with bubble tight shut-off and can control or shut-off bidirectional flow. Additional shut-off valves are not required when using a V-ball valve, which saves the user cost and reduces the number of overall components in the system. Lower Pressure Drop Globe valves are designed to restrict flow, so they also are not ideal for operations requiring full, unobstructed flow. Globe valves divert flow and use a plug to control the flow exiting the valve. V-Balls allow material to flow straight through the valve reducing pressure drops. V-Balls also have higher flow coefficients (Cv) compared to the same size globe valve. This means that a smallerV-Ball size can be used to achieve the same flow rate as a larger size globe valve. Higher Shut-Off Pressure One of the main limitations of a globe valves is that their close-off ratings can be lower than other valves, especially in the larger sizes. The entire system pressure is exerted on the globe valve plug, so large actuators are required to apply large amounts of force to actuate the valve. V-Ball valves 90° ball rotation allows them to operate and shut off at much higher pressures with smaller actuators. This means that your flow system can use smaller V-ball valves to accomplish same job as larger globe valves. For each of the reasons stated above, W.E.
